Saturday 18th February
5.00pm - 8.00pm
On a mid-summer’s evening the Rotorua Airport runway will be alive with the sights and sounds of bikes and all the people who love them.
It’s a family friendly event all about having a go and celebrating Rotorua’s unique bike culture.
A massive success in 2015 and 2016 with over 1000 riders taking part…
This is a fantastic free family event and a great way to be part of Rotorua’s fifth annual bike festival.
For 2017 we have made it really simple to take part in any of the 3 event options. Entry is free and all registrations take place on the day at the Rotorua Airport.
You just turn up on the day to the Rotorua Airport with your bike and helmet, get your bike and helmet checked by our friendly team, read the event rules, sign the participation agreement, receive a fantastic looking souvenir number plate and then you are ready to go.
The evening starts with the Elimination Race titled ‘Devil take the Hindmost’ where one rider is dropped every lap until there is one man or woman standing… or rather biking. The course will be approximately 600 metres long. Everyone is invited to the Spectator viewing area on the side of the runway to cheer on their favourite rider.
If you are a keen male or female road cyclist who wants to take part in a fast and exciting Elimination Race, then please email Cabin now firstname.lastname@example.org Entry is free of charge and we have good prize money for a Men’s and Woman’s race.
Rules: The age limit is 16 years minimum and you must compete on a road bike (with 700c wheels). Aero bars are prohibited.
People's Favourite - Ride the Runway
After the Elimination Race, we open up the runway for the people’s favourite – the Ride the Runway. Riders of all ages and sizes get to cruise up and down the smooth surface normally reserved for planes. Dress up, theme your bike and be in to win ‘best dressed’.
Rules: The minimum age to take part is four years old on the day of the event.
Open Speed Session
To round out the evening, there will be a 15 minute Open Speed Session for those who want to lay down the fastest flying kilometre time in world history – or at least Rotorua history. This will be a short sharp 15 minute session on the runway where the speed limit is removed and you get to crank up to your fastest speed possible. Again there is no fee and you just stay on the runway after the normal and slower riding of the runway event is over.
Rules: This minimum age to take part is fifteen years or older on the day of the event. The bike wheel size must be a minimum of 26 inches.
Helmets are compulsory for all participants.
On top of all the biking action is live music, Funky beats from DJ Rio, kids bike obstacle course, the chance to have a go on a Penny Farthing bike or a reverse steering bike, fire engines and photo booths.
There will also be a wide range of food and beverages available including Pita Pitt, Mean Beanz Espresso Coffee, the Night Burger, cold drinks and more… Bring a picnic blanket and make an entire evening of it.
Make sure you arrive early to ensure you get through registration in time for your event!
